St Savva in Belgrade presented by MadeinMycountry

The Church of Saint Sava Храм Светог Саве, Hram Svetog Save, ”The Temple of Saint Sava” is a Serbian Orthodox church in Belgrade. It is the fourth largest Eastern Orthodox church in the world and one of the largest churches in the world by gross volume.

The church is dedicated to Saint Sava, the first Serbian archbishop and the nation’s patron saint. It was symbolically built on the site where his relics are believed to have been burned on a pyre by the Ottoman Muslims in 1594, following a Serb uprising.

Construction of the church began in 1935 and was completed only in 2004, when the exterior was finished, and in 2020, when work on the interior was completed.

Inspired by the Hagia Sophia, in Constantinopolis of the Christian Byzantine empire, the Church of Saint Sava is one of Belgrade’s most recognizable landmarks and a major tourist attraction.

The church stands on the western promontory of the Vračar plateau, at an elevation of 134 m above sea level. The plateau is largely flat, except for the mound topped by the statue of Karađorđe. The base of the church is situated 18 m above Belgrade’s traditional geographic center, Terazije.

It is also 10 m higher than Tašmajdan Park, where the Church of Saint Mark, the second-largest church in Belgrade, is located. Rising 63 m above the confluence of the Sava and Danube, the church serves as a prominent natural viewpoint and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

In 2021, the Vračar plateau was declared a protected heritage site as the “Saint Sava Plateau”. The official rationale cited the “symbolic, memorial, cultural-historical, architectural-urbanistic, and artistic values of the locality”, which commemorates two important events in Serbian history: the burning of Saint Sava’s relics in 1594 and the siege of Belgrade in 1806.

The church is a centrally planned edifice in the form of a Greek cross, measuring 91 m from east to west and 81 m from north to south.

The dome of the Church of Saint Sava is double-shelled dome at 27 m high, reaching an external height of 68.5 m and an internal height of 64.8 m, while the main gold-plated Serbian cross is an additional 10 m high and 5 m wide, bringing the total height of the Church of Saint Sava to 78.3 m.

The dome is the largest of any Eastern Orthodox church, with an inner diameter of 30.5 m and an outer diameter of 35.1 m. Among churches of other Christian denominations, only the domes of 5 other churches have larger inner diameters. The dome of Saint Sava is the fourth-tallest dome of Eastern Orthodox Christianity,

The façade, covering an area of 12,000 m2 was primarily executed in polished white Volakas marble from Greece, with approximately 3,000 tonnes of stone used in its construction. The cornices are made of red Balmoral granite from Finland and cover 120 m2 on the dome and semi-domes.

The interior has a surface area of 3,650 m2 on the ground floor, with three galleries covering 1,500 m2 on the first level and a 120 m2 gallery on the second level. The church can accommodate up to 7,000 faithful on the ground floor.

The naos (temple in Greek), or main worship space, measures 46 m by 46 m, while the square of the central space beneath the dome is 39.7 m wide and occupies 1,578 m2 The church has narthexes on three sides, two of which are 9 m deep and 31.7 m wide, with small chapels located within the northern and southern narthexes.

Galleries supported by arcades are situated above the narthexes and beneath three of the four semi-domes (the semi-dome above the altar does not contain a gallery), while the western gallery serves as the church choir. The basement, with a total surface area of 1,800 m2, contains a crypt, including the Crypt Church of Saint Lazar the Hieromartyr.

The total area of the mosaics covering the interior of the church amounts about 15,000 m2constituting the largest mosaic surface across the Christendom. The mosaics, containing around 5 million tesseras and designed by Russian iconographer and sculptor Nikolay Mukhin, follow the classical Palaeologan-era tradition of gold mosaics.

The main “iconostasion” (Greek εικονοστασιον: the carved wood or marble partition that separates the main church from the Holy Altar and bears the large icons). is constructed from iron trusses onto which slabs of Carrara marble are installed. The entire structure of the approximately 20 metre-wide iconostasion weighs 100 tonnes. It is decorated with a row of six mosaic icons and contains three doors, while episcopal seats are positioned on both sides of the iconostasion.

The heraldic symbols of the Nemanjić dynasty are a dominant motif, while floral ornamentation and anthropomorphic figures are inspired by the rich sculptural tradition of the Morava style. The capitals are made of Carrara marble, while the columns are made of green Baveno marble.

The wheel chandelier, one of the largest and heaviest in the world, is the church’s main circular lighting fixture, cast in bronze with a diameter of 20 m.

The church has 49 bells, four of which are free-swinging and located in the southwestern tower. The remaining 45 are part of a carillon, the only one in the Balkans, which regularly performs the Hymn of Saint Sava.

The Giza plateau

Giza

The pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are among the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and indeed already were even in Roman times.

Each of these spectacular structures served as the final resting place of a king of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for king Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), and the other two for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is both the oldest and largest of the three, and the first building to exceed it in height would not be built for another 3,800 years!

Although the three pyramids dominate the plateau, they are in fact surrounded by many other monuments. Every king’s pyramid was just one element albeit the most important of a larger complex that included smaller, subsidiary, queens’ pyramids; an additional one that acted as a second, symbolic, tomb for the king, called a satellite pyramid; mastaba tombs for nobility and other family members; burials of actual and/or symbolic boats; and a pair of temples linked by a richly decorated causeway. One of these temples, called the valley temple, led into the pyramid complex, and was located on or near a body of water where boats could dock.

The other, the funerary (or upper) temple, stood near the base of the pyramid. Priests maintained the mortuary cult of the deceased king in these temples, where his divine aspect was worshiped, and where rich and diverse offerings were presented to his soul so he could have a peaceful and luxurious afterlife.

MadeinMycountry Europe (EU)

Europe (Ευρωπη): The name Europe originates from Greek mythology primarily linked to Europa (Ευρωπη), a Phoenician princess abducted by Zeus (Διας) who transformed into a white bull and carried her to Crete. Etymologically it derives from Greek roots “eurys” (ευρυς-wide) and “ops” (ωψ-face/eye), meaning “wide-gazing” (“ευρύ/ανοιχτό βλέμμα”) or “broad of aspect,” (“ευρύχωρη”) describing the landmass.

Miami was named after the Miami River, derived from Mayaimi, the historic name of Lake Okeechobee and the Native Americans who lived around it. Miami is sometimes colloquially referred to as The 305Magic CityGateway to the AmericasGateway to Latin AmericaCapital of Latin America, and Vice City.

Miami is noted as the only major city in the United States founded by a woman. Julia Tuttle, a local citrus grower and a wealthy Cleveland native, was the original owner of the land upon which Miami was built.

In the late 19th century, the area was known as “Biscayne Bay Country”, and reports described it as a promising wilderness and “one of the finest building sites in Florida”. Julia Tuttle subsequently convinced railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway to the region, for which she became known as “the mother of Miami”. Miami was officially incorporated as a city on July 28, 1896, with a population of just over 300.

After Fidel Castro rose to power in Cuba following the Revolution in 1959, many wealthy Cubans sought refuge in Miami, further increasing the city’s population. Miami’s national profile expanded dramatically in the 1970s, particularly in 1972. The region hosted both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in the 1972 Presidential election. The Miami Dolphins also made history with their undefeated “perfect” season. The area’s educational and cultural institutions also developed significantly in this period, positioning the city to service a larger and increasingly international population.

MadeinMycountry Belize: Caribbean dream destination!

Belize is a country on the north-eastern coast of Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Guatemala to the west and south. It also shares a maritime boundary with Honduras to the southeast. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and is considered part of the Caribbean region and the historical British West Indies.

The Belize Barrier Reef turned 10,000 years old on June 8, 2022, and Belize is celebrating the longevity of this natural wonder by pledging to continue preserving it for generations today and those to come. The second-largest barrier reef in the world, it extends the full length of Belize, forming an enormous lagoon along its coast and protecting its shores from large waves, even during extreme weather. This also creates an ideal habitat for a wide variety of oceanic creatures, from rock-like living coral to endangered sea turtles to over 500 species of fish in every color of the rainbow.

Belize has committed to preserving a full 30% of its oceanic territory— over 10,000 square kilometers, including each of its seven marine protected areas. Combined with other efforts like a total ban on single-use plastics taking effect in 2022, this has made Belize a leader in conservation in the Caribbean and, truly, the world.

Belize’s Barrier Reef has long drawn SCUBA divers, snorkelers and fisherman from across the globe, so it’s no surprise it was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1996. The region is also home to 3 of only 4 atolls in all of the Atlantic Ocean, numerous patch reefs that dot the offshore waters and the world-famous “Great Blue Hole” as well. Belize is an aquatic wonderland that Charles Darwin himself once called “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies,” and Belize aims to keep it that way!

MadeinMycountry Caribbean sea

The Caribbean Sea is a sea of the North Atlantic Ocean in the tropics of the Western Hemisphere. It is bounded by the Greater Antilles to the north from Cuba to Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles to the east from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad and Tobago, South America to the south from the Venezuelan coastline to the Colombian coastline, and Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula to the west from Panama to Mexico.

The Caribbean Sea is one of the largest seas on Earth and has an area of about 2,754,000 km2 (1,063,000 sq mi). The Caribbean Sea has the world’s second-largest barrier reef, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. It runs 1,000 km (620 mi) along the Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras coasts.

The region around the Caribbean Sea, including the numerous islands of the West Indies and adjacent coastal areas in the mainland of the Americas, is known as the Caribbean.

The Caribbean is the home of about 9% of the world’s coral reefs, covering about 50,000 km2 (19,000 sq mi), most of which are located off the Caribbean islands and the Central American coast. Among them, the Belize Barrier Reef stands out, with an area of 963 km2 (372 sq mi), which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. It forms part of the Great Mayan Reef (also known as the MBRS) and, being more than 1,000 km (600 mi) in length, is the world’s second longest. It runs along the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

Since 2005, unusually warm Caribbean waters have been increasingly threatening the coral reefs. Coral reefs support some of the most diverse marine habitats in the world, but they are fragile ecosystems. When tropical waters become unusually warm for extended periods of time, microscopic plants called zooxanthellae, which are symbiotic partners living within the coral polyp tissues, die off.

These plants provide food for the corals and give them their color. The result of the death and dispersal of these tiny plants is called coral bleaching and can lead to the devastation of large areas of reef. More than 42% of corals are completely bleached, and 95% are experiencing some type of whitening. Historically, the Caribbean is thought to contain 14% of the world’s coral reefs.

MadeinMycountry Scandinavia

The Nordic countries (also known as the Nordics or Norden ‘the North are a geographical and cultural region in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic. It includes the sovereign states of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden; the autonomous territories of the Faroe Islands and Greenland; and the autonomous region of Åland.

The Nordic countries cluster near the top in education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of life and human development. Each country has its own economic and social model, sometimes with large differences from its neighbors. Still, they share aspects of the Nordic model of economy and social structure to varying degrees. This includes a mixed market economy combined with strong labor unions and a universalist welfare sector financed by high taxes, enhancing individual autonomy and promoting social mobility. There is a high degree of income redistribution, commitment to private ownership and little social unrest.

“Nordic countries” include Norway, Sweden, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands), Finland, and Iceland. These five countries use the Nordic Council to work together on political and cultural activities. Denmark, Sweden, and Finland are also members of the European Union, but only Finland is part of the eurozone, meaning that it uses the Euro as its money. The other Nordic countries still use their own money, called krone or krona (from the word “crowns”). Norway and Iceland, which are not members of the EU, are members of NATO and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Only Denmark, Sweden and Finland are members of both the EU and NATO.

The very low population density in much of Scandinavia, except Denmark, means that there is often more nature preserved in these countries, resulting in the beautiful forests, tundras, and fjords that you’ll find across the Nordics.

The Norwegian fjords are one of nature’s most spectacular creations. Their long, serpentine shores traverse picturesque landscapes, while their calm waters welcome travelers all year long.

The Geirangerfjord is among the most famous and most visited fjords in Norway, and not without reason. The area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding beauty.

Northern Norway is dark from afternoon until late morning, when the northern lights frequently soar across the sky. Our bold claim is that this part of Norway, with its multiple islands, deep fjords and steep mountains, is among the world’s most beautiful and interesting places in which to see the northern lights.

Nordic citizens experience a high sense of autonomy and freedom, as well as high levels of social trust towards each other, which play an important role in determining life satisfaction.

As the Norwegians say..Scandinavians do not live “in nature” but rather live “with nature”.
